BMW X2 crossover confirmed for Australia

The slick BMW X2 small crossover is a sure thing to come to Australia to rival the Audi Q2 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, most likely in the first half of 2018.

Previewed last September as a concept car, the X2 will be based on BMW Group’s UKL platform, which currently underpins the Mini Cooper, BMW X1 and the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer.

It could make its world premiere in production form as soon as this September, in Frankfurt, one year after its concept debut.

The lower, more stylised X2 will sit alongside the more practical X1 in the same way that the X4 complements the X3, and the X6 complements the X5.

From an Australian perspective, any new crossover is of vital importance, given more than half its total sales last year were were from its ‘X’ crossover family, led by the X5.

Sales of premium ‘small SUVs’ in Australia, as they are classified by industry statistician VFACTS, grew 45 per cent last year.

“From a pure numerical perspective it makes perfect sense, and basically follows the concept of SAV coupes like the X4 and X6, which are going from strength to strength,” BMW Australia managing director Marc-Heinrich Werner said.

“I believe that the X2 will be another big success in the segment,” he added, while confirming it would come here. In 2018? “We’ll see,” was all he’d reply.

Indeed, the X2 has already been spied testing in its production form – as far back as November last year. And, although heavily camouflaged, it is clear from our spy photos that the general shape of the final car

will not stray far from its concept progenitor.
